Notes for AUSTA SMACK:
Her birth certificate list full name as Austa Smack. Yet I've heard she used the middle name of "Darnell". I've not seen it on anything yet. Her death Certificate has Austa D. Burgess. 2002 Aunt Ruth thinks the middle name may have been DeVore. **I could have swore she was the one who told me Darnell years ago. ======================================
On the marriage certificate of Austa and Bob Burgess, in 16 Dec 1913, Ross County, Ohio she list her birth as Bourneville, OH (Twin twp), her birth certificate says she was born in Concord twp, she list on th marriage certificate that her residence as Thrifton, OH. I've been told Austie was m (1) to Horace Huff but divorced him because he was an alcoholic. I've seen no certificate of this marriage. She met Bob when Bob came over to have a few beers with Horace. I "think" she was just living with Horace. Austa was a "crack shot" with a pistol, she was politically minded and wrote under the alias "Sally" at times. She also wrote poetry. She ran a filling station and grocery store located in Centerfield, Ohio. Unsure when she started the store business. Probably in the WWII time? She was 33 years of age when she had her first child. Bob Burgess was 29 years old. Within 9 years and 5 months they'd have a total of seven children. Close to 43 years of age she had my father, John Henry Burgess, her last child.

To date, 1991, of their 19 grandchildren, 17 grew to adulthood, 15 have married, 14 have children, 6 have divorced and 2 have remarried. They have 28 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Update: 2004, of the 17 Grandchildren: now 15 have married once; 10 div'd; 4 remarried, 1 div'd again, 15 have had children.

Of the Great Grandchildren: Now 30 of them: 11 have married, 2 div'd, 1 div'd again; 12 have children.

There are 20 known Great Great Grandchildren, 15 of these from John Henry's family and the other 5 from Ruth Deluca's. 1 of these had married and has two children.

There are 2 known Great Great Great Grandchildren, both from John Henry's family.

Bob Burgess owned a garage in Centerfield, Ohio. He was very mechanical. Someone said he had sketches and drawings that were for the hydrolic or electronic brakes. After his death no one knew what he had invented. Not long after they were patented by another. Bob's sons Billy & John also have this mechanical talent as does John's son Jon Willis "Bill" Burgess.
Bob and Austa are buried at Bridges Cemetery once better known as the Hardins Creek Cemetery and even the Milner Family Graveyard. Austa used to take me to church with her. I guess we attended a Quaker church, the Centerfield Friends Church. It was only across the road from her home and store. When our family traveled to Centerfield from Sylvania, Ohio, us kids knew we were close to Grandma's house when we started going through the covered bridges for which "Bridges" was named. Centerfield is half way between Bridges and Greenfield.
