A tender story told to me by Aunt Ruth Burgess Deluca, she recalls as a young child going one fourth of July to visit Blanch's grave with her grandfather, Eli Burgess. She said her grandfather sat and cried at her grave.

Notes for AUSTA SMACK: Her birth certificate list full name as Austa Smack. Yet I've heard she used the middle name of "Darnell". I've not seen it on anything yet. Her death Certificate has Austa D. Burgess. 2002 Aunt Ruth thinks the middle name may have been DeVore. **I could have swore she was the one who told me Darnell years ago.

Austa's marriage record in Ross Co, Ohio list Thrifton, Ohio as her residence and has Bourneville, Ohio as her place of birth. Bourneville may be in Corcord Twp. Occupation stenographer. Father - Silas Smack, Mother - Anna Hester.
She does not admit to a first marriage on this certificate yet she told her children she was married to Horance Huff. The 1910 census proves she was with him and they both said married two years. Whether they were actually "married" I don't know. I've not searched for a certificate. There might be one in Highland Co., Ohio.

Austie is not Ralph's mother. His mother shows as B. Etta in the 1900 census.

Austa divorced Horance Huff because he was an alcoholic. I've seen no certificate of this marriage but the census does prove she was living with him. She met Bob when he came to see Horance and drink a few beers with him. I "think" maybe she was just living with Horance. The age difference surprises me a bit.

Austa was a "crack shot" with a pistol, she was politically minded and wrote under the alias "Sally" at times. She also wrote poetry. She ran a filling station and grocery store located in Centerfield, Ohio. Unsure when she started the store business. Probably in the WWII time? She was 33 years of age when she had her first child. Bob Burgess was 29 years old. Within 9 years and 5 months they'd have a total of seven children. Close to 43 years of age she had my father, John Henry Burgess, her last child. To date, 1991, of their 19 grandchildren, 17 grew to adulthood, 15 have married, 14 have children, 6 have divorced and 2 have remarried. They have 28 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Bob Burgess owned a garage in Centerfield, Ohio. He was very mechanical. Someone said he had sketches and drawings that were for electronic brakes. Only after his death no one knew what he had invented. Not long after they were patented by another. Bob's sons Billy & John also have this mechanical talent as does John's son Jon Willis "Bill" Burgess. Bob and Austa are buried at Bridges Cemetery once better known as the Hardins Creek Cemetery and even the Milner Family Graveyard. Austa used to take me to church with her. I guess we attended a Quaker church, the Centerfield Friends Church. It was only across the road from her home and store. When our family traveled to Centerfield from Sylvania, Ohio, us kids knew we were close to Grandma's house when we started going through the covered bridges for which "Bridges" was named. Centerfield is half way between Bridges and Greenfield.
