A concise outline of all the descendants.

Some say the "Smack's" are of German descent. Others say Dutch. One thinks James might be related to Hendrick Smack the founder of the Smack's in Maryland. Here is a little about him: "As for the question of where Hendrick Matthysen Smack was born, there is no proof (that I am aware of) of his place of birth. I presume, however, that he (like his wife)came from The Netherlands. This presumption is reinforced by the fact that there were "Smack" families living in Dordrecht and near Hoorn (in the old province of Holland)in the mid-seventeenth century (i. e., about the time of Hendrick's estimated date of birth). The spelling of the name was later changed to "Smak," a name still found in Netherlands telephone directories, especially in the province of North Holland.

***Oddly, I've not connected Hendrick to the Maryland "Smocks or Smacks" yet. From the sites I've looked at I see no Maryland connection. I do see New Jersey and New York. I think more likely our Smacks are connected to a HENRY SMACK and ELIZABETH MORRIS of Somerset & Worcester Counties, Maryland. Silas's sister, Henrietta was probably named after him. I welcome anyone in the family to help me search out and find our ancestors! HELP : )

Variation of the name have been seen as : Smack, Smock, Smak, Schmock, Schmolck and (Van der) Smack. Anyone know of others?

What we know about James W. Smack's past is very little. From the 1850 and 1860 census's we know he states he was born in Maryland. There are quite a few Smack families in the Worcester Co area in MD so that is where we are looking and a few have a son James. We are still trying to find the "link". In 1850 he gives his age as 34 making his birth about 1816. In 1860 he gives his age as 42 making is birth about 1818.

Maybe the W in James's name is for William?

William Smock who married Jane Heath (Hath) in 1834 in Ross County Ohio.

**If this is him that would be be 3 marriages for him and this a first.
1850 Census makes his birth abt 1816.
This marriage would make him 18 at the time.....so it's possible.
Did the kids run away from home? The reason he used William and not James?

Or is William a brother to James who we've never connected?

JAMES W. SMACK was born Abt. 1816 or 1818 (Worcester), Maryland.

In OHIO we first find him in a marriage certificate in 1843, Ross County. Oddly his middle initial shows as "J". One has said his initial looks like a "B" in the 1860 census.

From the 1850 Union twp, Ross Co., Ohio census Eland shows as "Ellen" and she states she is 26, born Ohio, so we figure her birth year as 1824. No young children show in the 1850 census - they have been married 7 years. It's possible any children they had might have died as infants. In 1860, James shows with a new wife, Bosilie. They married Jan 6 of 1853 so December 1853 might be correct as being Henrietta's birth. That would mean James born 1851 and John are probable Ellen's sons and she would have died probably when John was born 1852 probably in Union twp, Ross Co., OH.

There is a strong possibility "Ellen" is the daughter of Lirm/Lim/Linn Martin and Elizabeth who show on the same page.

daughter of JAMES TAYLOR and TABITHA BUNDICK.

I don't know what initals stand for.

**My baby book (1949) had Silas's mother as Abasta Taylor and on a certificate it looked more like Alisha to me. So finding out her name was Barshaba was a complete surprise to me. Only proves how information can be passed down through the generations so wrongly. Still don't know how they know her is Barshaba when she shows as Bosilie on the census. Even though Maryleda isn't a "Smack" I will keep her information here and I hope to learn about her child or children.

MARYLEDA SMACK , b. 1841, VA., age 19 in 1850 census; d 1882, age 41 ?childbirth?; she m (1) to Mate Griffith d abt 1878. They have one daughter.

"Mary" married (2) (w2) December 25, 1879 to Daniel Leonard "Dan" Logan b September 12, 1840 Ohio; d November 06, 1920 Fairfield Twp., Highland Co., OH; buried Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Leesburg, Highland Co.,OH; They have 2 daughters; Dan is the son of Samuel Logan & Sarah Huff. When Mary dies he marries (3) to Henrietta, her half sister.

I had thought if Maryleda was a child of James and Ellen she would have showed with them in the 1850 census. She does not. So she probably is a child of Barshaba's by a first marriage or a child out of wedlock, therefore given the Smack name. Barshaba was 37 years old when she married James Smack. Maryleda would have been age 12 at this time. Maryleda was born VA, as was Barshaba. Seems that Barshaba, alone or with her 1st husband moved from VA to Ohio.

MARY STEVENS *Listed on step-sons's death certificate - least seems it would be her. This might be our first clue as to who Barshaba was married to first. A man by the name of STEVENS?

A certificate on Jasper Logan says his mother is Mary Stevens.
His mother Sarah "Sally" died when he was under 4 years of age. I suspect whoever filled out the certificate thought Mary to be his mom and maybe didn't know she was a step-mother. Jasper had another step-mother by the time he was 10, Dan married Mary's half sister Heneta or Henrietta "Rettie" but obviously the person knew Rettie was a step-mom but didn't know that Mary was a step-mom too. Least these are my initial thoughts. (LBF)

John may be the 1st child of Barshaba and James but he could be a child born to Ellen. We know nothing of his life. Did he grow up and marry? Who is the 1st James born abt 1851-1852, age 8 in 1860? He must be a son of James and Ellen. Why do they name another son James if they already have a son James? There's also a chance James could be Barshaba's by a first husband.

We can be sure that Henata is a child of James and Barshaba, based on their marriage and her birth date. We know James moves at some point from Union twp to Twin twp, in Ross Co., as that is where he shows up in the 1860 census. From James G's birth info it appears it was between the years 1853 and 1856. From the census's we know James was a laborer in Union twp, Ross County, OH 1850 and a wood chopper in Twin twp, Ross Co., Ohio in 1860.

We don't know yet where or when James and Barshaba died but have found yet another James Smack who married:::

James N. Smack m 30 May 1867 in Trumbull Co. Ohio to a Mary Anthony

Did "our" James W / J / Smack marry a third/fourth time? Or did his son, a very young James b 1851-1852 get married? The search goes on.

**as I look at the births of James G & Silas W, I am doubting they were born 7 months apart. A birth Of April 1856 for James G. would make them 11 months apart. Still pretty close births. Maybe some better "proof" of their births will surface.

Henrietta Smack married (3rd wife) on 23 Nov. 1882, Fayette co. Ohio to DANIEL LEONARD LOGAN, born in September 12, 1840 in Ohio, died November 06, 1920 Fairfield Twp., Highland Co., OH and is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, on Rt. 62 N. of Leesburg, Highland Co., Ohio. He is the son of SAMUEL LOGAN and SARAH HULL.

Daniel married (1) SARAH "SALLY" ANN GRAHAM, ROTHEWELL Abt. 1868, prob Ohio. He is her second husband. They have 3 children. She was born Abt. 1842 in Ohio, and died December 23, 1876 in Ohio.

It is said that Silas W. Smack and his brother James G. Smack went to Iowa. Austa, was born in March 10, 1881 Concord twp, OH, her brother Charles Garfield Smack was born 29 Aug 1882 in Des Moines, Iowa so this story is true. We know they had to have left between 1881 and 1882. It's likely that James's daughter Lilly May was also born in Des Moines, Iowa. The Smack's are said to have been carpenters, blacksmiths, painter, and piano-makers. Silas's death certificate says Farm Hand.

1926 - Death Certificate has the dates:

b 17 March 1858, d 5 Jun 1926 and that he is a widower.

That his mother is Alisha Taylor b in VA

1860 Census - says he's 3 years old - birth would be 1857.
It's possible someone gave his age wrong for the census but it also possible the informant on the death certificate gave his birth year wrong.

**My baby book 1949 has him b 17 March 1857, d 6 Jun 1926.
My 1949 baby book has his mother as Abasta Taylor.
This information would have been given to my mom by Austa.

His death certificate says his birth year is 1858 but according to family history, we have always wrote it down as 1857 and the census seems to varify this date. After the brothers returned to Ohio, it appears James's family settled Salem, Buckskin twp, Ross County, Ohio and Silas's in Fairfield twp, Highland county, Ohio.

My grandfather Smack is where our clearest and most interesting records begin. Great-grandfather Silas Schmock (Smack) and his brother James were born in Bavaria, Germany. I was born on a cold December morning in 1915 in a God awful place called Centerfield, Ohio. At two years of age, I knew I hated mud and there was plenty of it in Centerfield. I attended a little red schoolhouse that taught eight grades in one room. (like on the TV show, "Little House On The Prairie") During my times at that school, I won a prize for having the highest grades for all eight years. It was a book called "Nursing In The Home". I promptly threw it in the garbage. Sick people turn me off! High School was much better. I excelled in swimming and I did stunt diving.

The Great Depression was really bad in Centerfield so, in 1935, I left Centerfield and moved to Brooklyn, New York to stay with my Aunt Edie and Uncle Leo. I got a job that paid $8 a week. I quit, of course, and got another job but $16.50 a week was my top salary. I met my husband, Bill, in 1936 about Labor Day. We went steady for a year and a half, then got married. We lived a terrific life together. My husband was the greatest man that ever lived. He passed away eighteen years ago but I still miss him. I'm healthy (as a horse, my grandson says), drive a car, drink beer and head off to Atlantic City every now and then. I live alone and love it, but my family, who live just upstairs, loves me very much so I'm never alone.

DELUCA, Ruth A.

Ruth A. DeLuca, age 91, of West Toledo, passed away January 16, 2007, at Hospice of Toledo. Ruth was a seamstress working with her husband who was the owner of Delta Upholstery in New York City, which made draperies for the Kennedy White House and many other famous people. She was an avid bridge and euchre player.

Ruth was the widow of William DeLuca. Surviving are daughter, Linda and Don; grandchildren, William, James, Bobby and Regina and six great grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her son, William "Bobby" DeLuca.

Friends may call at Boyer-Van Wormer-Scott Funeral Home, 5055 Secor Rd., north of Laskey Rd., Wednesday from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. where services will be held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Private interment.

A loving mother and grandmother, Annette also worked as a press operator for the Reichert Stamping Co. for 5 years and prior to that, for the Sharon Manufacturing Co. for 27 years. Annette was an active union member of the UAW Local 12 and served on the women's committee.
She is survived by her son, Billy A. (Connie) Burgess; sisters, Delores Nunziato, Lucille McLaughin, and Phillis Sansiviero; brother, Burnard Forcucci, and 4 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Burgess; son, Robert A. Burgess and brother, Nicholas Forcucci.

JOHN HENRY BURGESS was born January 26, 1924 in Highland County, Centerfield, Ohio, and died April 05, 1974 in Lucas County, Toledo, Ohio, age 50, heart attack (he had several strokes during his lifetime), son of Robert Orville Burgess & Austa Smack. John met February 1947 in Ross Co., Chillicothe, Ohio, NORMA LOU TOOHEY born 1928 in Ross County, Kinnikinnick, Ohio, daughter of JOHN TOOHEY and LULU MAE ARLEDGE.

John has an innate mechanical ability as does many of the "Burgess" men. His father, Bob, could make something from nothing. John's son, Bill and his son, Jason also have mechanical talents. John's brother, Billy does too.

John worked at a shoe factory running a sewing machine before enlisting in the Army. John served in WWII, as an Army Medical Corpsman. He was promoted to Corporal. He was overseas almost 3 years and served in England, Ireland, France and Belgium. His medals include the "American Theater, European Theater, Victory and Good Conduct." He was inducted Feb. 23, 1943 and entered March 2, 1943 at Cincinnati, Ohio. He was with the 79th General Hospital and his military occupation was surgical technician. Serial Number 357 90614. He served 3 years, 1 month and 20 days. Discharged April 22, 1946. While in England he suffered an attack of appendicitis and underwent surgery. While in the service he learned how to rollerskate and was an excellent skater. His first job after serving his country was at the VA beginning in 1946 - (Veterans Administration Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio) as an attendant. 1951 - moved to Hamden (Vinton Co), Ohio to work for Charles R. Stevens in Wellston (Jackson Co) (Wellston just south of Hamden). Charlie started a company in Toledo, Ohio and when it was located at a building on Sylvania Avenue, near Upton Avenue, John started working for him in Toledo. John moved his family to Toledo, September 15, 1953. Dec 1, 1954 moved to new home: 5663 Dornell Drive, Sylvania, Ohio 43560. John worked 16 years for the Charles Stevens, Inc. which in 1957 moved to 501 West Sophia Street, Maumee, Ohio. (John quit in 1969)

In 1967 - John, brother Billy, Bob Snyder and Larry Gess founded the "Advance Products, Inc.". Both John and Billy were designers and inventor for the company. John was also the traveling salesman for the Company which was located at 6630 Maumee Western Rd. Maumee, OH 865-4701; Norma sold her share of the company's stock back to the company. The company is still in operation today (1991).

John H. Burgess, 50, a Maumee businessman, died today in Toledo Hospital.

Mr. Burgess who lived at 5663 Dornell Dr., Sylvania, was one of the founders of Advance Products, Inc. in Maumee. The firm manufactures equipment for paper mills. He was also a designer for the company. Prior to establishing the firm seven years ago Mr. Burgess was employed at Charles H. Stevens, Inc. A native of Centerfield, O., he was a World War II veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Norma, daughter, Beverly, and Mrs. Laura Frankhouser; sons Jon W. and Spencer; sisters, Mrs. Ruth DeLuca; and Mrs. Katherine Cockerill, and brothers; Robert, Richard, and Billy.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the Reeb Mortuary, Sylvania, where the body will be after 7 p.m. Saturday.

Denise's notes: I really don't know much else about Grandpa as I was only 5 when he died. Perhaps you could fill in gaps as to where they met. My cousin, David Bastian, told me Grandpa was a cowboy in the early part of the 1900's. That he went to California and worked on a ranch owned by Randolph Scott or Tom Mix. He thinks he might of been an extra in a western movie. He then came back to Ohio.
Uncle Willie Bastian married Dorthea Hoor [Horr] daughter of Bert W., from Leesburg. The Smocks & Horrs were from the same area, they met through Grandpa's niece Austa. Uncle Willie & Aunt Dot lived in Leesburg until the mid 1970's then moved to Oregon. He owned a gas station/garage by the railroad tracks in town. David says it's still there.

At the time she was residing with Matthew in Hale, Michigan. Murvin and Zena resided in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, then moved to Nevada. They returned to the Michigan state before he died. He had a fatal heart attack just before they were to attend their "50th" Golden Wedding Anniversary Party.

Concerning Jay "Eldo" Smock's name change from SMACK to SMOCK. I think, if I remember correctly I was told that the Army made the mistake writing down his name. By the time he realized the mistake, he thought it was okay and said it'd be too much of a hassle to change it now. Not sure if Eldo was in WWI or was this story about Murvin Smock in WWII???

Notes for Bertha:

She was born in May 4,1884 [her birth record says 1885]. On her birth record her name is Susi Baker. We have not figured out where, when or why she changed her name to Bertha. I was always told her name was Bertha Susan [Baker] Smock.
Clarence & Susi had three [possibly four] children namely Hermah, Elmer & my dad, Versel. They were divorced between 1912-13. She married Joseph Bastian 1913-14. They had one son, Wilbur, born in 1915. He [Joe] died in 1917. She then married Jay Eldo Smock Oct. 5, 1918 in Georgia during WWl. Don't know where or how they met or how she got to Georgia. Uncle Elmer & my dad were raised by their Grimwood Grandparents in Montcalm Co., Aunt Hermah went to Pontiac with Grandma after the divorce. They all stayed close growing up & had many family gatherings through the years. Notes By Denise Glover.

Fayette County Ohio Births, (This volume is a Xerox of the original birth record books. Unfortunately, the page numbers were cut off in copying.) list Jay Eldo Smack born 4 April 1887.

Grandpa Smock was a policeman in Detroit during prohibition. Afterwards he worked in an auto factory. He was crippled with arthritis in later years. I remember him sitting in a big chair. My dad (Versel Grimwood) just called him "Smock" never knew he had a name when I was little. Dad went to live with Grandma & Grandpa Smock in the 1920's.

I really don't know much else about Grandpa as I was only 5 when he died. Perhaps you could fill in gaps as to where they met. My cousin, David Bastian, told me Grandpa was a cowboy in the early part of the 1900's. That he went to California and worked on a ranch owned by Randolph Scott or Tom Mix. He thinks he might of been an extra in a western movie. He then came back to Ohio.
