BURGESS

Samuel Burges

Samuel Burges is my ancestor. One fact I'm sure of. Many things about him I'm am still unsure of. We're pretty sure he arrived in America in 1685. We're sure he had 6 children born in Falls twp, Buck County, Pennsylvania, the first in 1687. His wife was Eleanor "Ellen". His sister may have been Joan Burges Moon. Seems very likely.

I will present the information and questions I have. Perhaps if your good at a puzzle you can dive in and help solve the mystery of his date of birth and parents. A few researches have their opinions and guesses. I keep an open mind to all possiblilities.

Descendants of Samuel Burges

More About SAMUEL BURGESS:
Emigration: 1685, From England

SAMUEL BURGESS (possible son of EDWARD) was born 1662 in Bristol, England, and died 1713 in Falls Twp., Bucks Co., PA, Burial: Falls MH Cemetery, Bucks Co., PA.
Will: September 09, 1714 - proven;
He married ELEANOR "Ellen" ELLIN PEERES Bef. 1685 in England. She died in Falls Twp., Bucks County, PA; Burial: Falls MH Cemetery, Bucks Co., PA

pg 214 of "A Genealogical & Personal History Of Bucks County, PA" by Wm W. H. Davis has an account of THE BURGES FAMILY. Unfortunately it doesn't mention the parents of Samuel Burges, nor what part of England he was from. We know he was married to Eleanor and had 6 children after his arrival to the area. We can assume all his children were born in Falls Twp., Bucks County, PA.

Eleanor's name does show up as Ellen in "History of Bucks Co", Vol 3 by Davis, on page 1446 of the Records of Falls Meeting:
Samuel Burges - Ellen Burges
ch: Priscilla Burges b 1696-8-30
Sarah Burges b 1701-8-29

One source, unsure now who, has Samuel b 22 Oct 1645, m 1671 and wife as Ellin Peeres.

My thoughts are if Samuel married 14yrs before coming to PA in 1685 he'd have brought children with him. I think Samuel & Eleanor married and set sail for America to start a new life here. It's quite possible that Ellin was a 1st wife who bore him no children and upon her death he married Eleanor. If this is true he'd have been 40yrs old upon sailing for America but I'm unsure where the birth date of 1662 Bristol, England came from but I tend to think that is more likely.

A Genealogical & Personal History of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, by Wm W. H. Davis, 1905, page 214. (*my comments)

THE BURGES FAMILY, with whom the Moon & Price families are much inter-married, are descended from Samuel & Eleanor Burges, who came from England in 1685 and settled in Falls twp. on 200 acres of land purchased of William Penn, for 1 silver shilling per acre. (* 1 shilling is 1/20 of a pound or equal to 12 pennies or .14 of a US dollar or $ 24.00) The original deed for which is still in possession of their decendants. This land joined that on which James and Joan (Burges) Moon settled, and Samuel was probably a brother of Joan Moon. On this tract lying on both sides of the road now leading through the village of Fallsington, all the Friends meeting houses of Falls Meeting have been built. In 1689, when the Friends decided to build a meeting house, Samuel Burges gave them six acres on which the first meeting house and graveyard were located. The first building was of logs and the second of bricks. In the latter a school was kept for many years in which the great grandchildren of Samuel Burges, living in 1855, remember attending being used as a school after the erection of the third meeting house, a little distant from the first site and now (* 1905) used as a dwelling house. The fourth meeting house was erected in 1789 on the first location, north of the graveyard and Newportville Road, and is still used by one branch of the Society. The fifth Meeting House was built in 1840, when a stone school house erected in 1799 was removed to make room for it, the present school house being erected in 1817. The will of Samuel Burges, made in 1713, mentions wife, Eleanor, sons, Joseph, Samuel, John & Daniel, and daughters Priscilla and Sarah. Priscilla became the wife of Samuel Bunting, and an account of her descendants is given in this volume. Sarah married John Hutchinson and an account of her descendants is also given in the Rickey family. Samuel the son, a member of assembly in 1712, married Ann Snowden and had three children. Margaret, married Joseph Jackson; Rebecca married Joseph Church; Ann died single. Joseph Burges married Hannah Wilson, and had five children: Daniel, of whom a more a particular account; Joseph married Deborah Fisher and removed to Buckingham, later to Baltimore, Maryland and subsequently to Virginia, had children Thomas, Sarah, John, Tacy, Martha and Daniel, of whom, Thomas married Elizabeth Hendricks and removed to Highland County, Ohio about 1813; John, Sarah, and Hannah. John, son of Samuel and Eleanor, married Mary Duer, and had six children: Samuel, Ellen, Jonathan, Mary, Susanna and Martha. Daniel Burges, son of Samuel & Eleanor was twice married, but left no issue, devising his farm, part of the 600 acres purchased by Samuel, the pioneer in 1695, to his brother Joseph's son, Daniel. Daniel Burges, son of Joseph and Hannah (Wilson) Burges, married June 17, 1750, Lydia Sisom & had eight children: Joseph, born 3 month, 31, 1752, married 11 month, 8, 1780 Sarah Matson; Rachel, born 11 month, 14, 1753, married Moses Moon; Hannah bor 12 month, 23, 1755, married Joseph Child; Sarah born 9 month, 17, 1758, died at the age of 96 years; Rebecca, born 10 month, 26, 1763 married John Burton; Edith born 3 month, 15, 1766, married Joseph Headley; Phebe, born 6 month, 20, 1769, died single in 1839; Amos, born 10 month, 11, 1772, married Sarah Boulton. Daniel Burges married (second) time, Sarah Moon and had two children: Daniel born 10 month, 15, 1780, married Deborah Wood and lived on the homestead for some years and then removed to New York State; and Elizabeth, born 11 month, 28, 1784, died at the age of 18 years. Joseph Burges, eldest son of Daniel and Lydia, married Sarah Matson & had eight children: Moses born 8 month, 17, 1781 married Ann Hancock; Lydia, born 8 month, 28, 1783 also died single; Rachel, born 7 month, 26, 1789 married John Price; John, Joseph and Aaron died young. Joseph Burges married, second, Deborah Bailey and had one child, Mary born 12 month, 24, 1803, died young. Moses and Ann (Hancock) Burges, had eight children, Joseph, Sarah, Phebe, Moses, Rebecca, Robert, Ann & George of whom, Robert & Phebe still reside on the ancestral homestead, and are nearing the sunset of life. Anna Price Moon, Elizabeth Price Tatum, and Mary C. Price, daughters of Daniel B. & Sarah (Burges) Price, with their children are the only living descendants of Joseph and Sarah (Matson) Burges.

GEORGE FOX - An Autobiography

CHAPTER XVII. At the Work of Organizing
1667-1670.
The "Bristol Register of Friends" shows the date of the marriage of George Fox to Margaret Fell to have been "Eighth month" 27th, 1669.
So, after I had thus acquainted the children with it, our intention of marriage was laid before Friends, both privately and publicly, to their full satisfaction. Many of them gave testimony thereunto that it was of God. Afterwards, a meeting being appointed for the accomplishing thereof, in the meeting-house at Broad-Mead, in Bristol, we took each other, the Lord joining us together in honourable marriage, in the everlasting covenant and immortal Seed of life. In the sense thereof living and weighty testimonies were borne thereunto by Friends, in the movings of the heavenly power which united us.[190] Then was a certificate, relating both the proceedings and the marriage, openly read, and signed by the relations, and by most of the ancient Friends of that city, besides many others from diverse parts of the nation.

((*After returning from an trip to America:))

We had foul weather and contrary winds, which caused us to cast anchor often, so that we were till the 31st ere we could get past the capes of Virginia and out into the main sea. But after this we made good speed, and on the 28th of the Fourth month cast anchor at King's Road, which is the harbour for Bristol.
